Seven Deadly Sins
These would all be considered failings of character that would be condemned and avoided by all morally right people.
Pride
Boasting is a feeling of invisibility. Often these types of people are fighting to be seen because they feel radically unseen. It will manifest as believing you are more than you say you are, your abilities and your importance. Typically they believe in their core that they are bad. To get past this, they must recognize their own limitations. Humility is the answer.
Envy
Jealousy of others is indicative of what someone longs for in their own life. Having joy for others’ success and a desire to do good for others will counteract this. Kindness and gratitude are the answers.
Wrath
This is characterized by intense anger and hatred often leading to vengeance. Panic, anxiety and fear also arise. Someone is fighting for their life when this is their mode of being. Patience and calm endurance of suffering and difficult people are the virtue. Being gracious and forgiving are the answers.
Gluttony
The most common form of this is eating too much because there is emotional starvation. People who struggle with this need kindness, security and emotional connection. Overweight is generally a symbol of emotional undernourishment. This can be overindulgence with anything, but it is especially true with food and drink. Self control and moderation are the answers to this.
Lust
Intense and uncontrolled sexual desires mark this sin, often promiscuity or licentiousness. Sex is the epitome of promiscuity to this sin. The root of the desire and function of this behavior is relational and emotional security. Purity of thought and action counteract this struggle. Honoring the dignity of yourself and others are the answer.
Sloth
Laziness is fear. Fear of humiliation or fear of being ill equipped. It is more useful to be scared of doing nothing than it is to be scared of doing something bad. Effort in work and continual refinement of skills is the answer.
Greed
The powerful urge to take more than the fair share is due to the feeling of deprivation. It’s a fear of deprivation or feeling desperate. It is marked by the excessive desire for accumulation. Generosity is the answer.
Sins don’t inherently mean we are bad people. It’s the shape our unmet needs take when they haven’t been properly addressed. They should be explored with humble affection in search of helping to rid the sin and fulfill the appetite. Pride is the cardinal sin because it leads to all the other ones. If your sins are ignored, it can be detrimental to you and/or the people around you. Even if you are not religious, there is value in the insight that the religious traditions have to offer. If it is chosen to leave unaddressed, then the morality of a person may come into question.
